WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and content management system (CMS) powered by PHP and MySQL. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 powers 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet.

Originally developed as a blogging software, WordPress has evolved into a highly configurable general website platform. There is a vast array of freely-available plugins that can provide specialized functionality to your website. Web Designs of Houston will install and configure WordPress for you, develop a template to present your chosen look and feel, install and configure plugins to provide functionality and populate your site with your content. We also offer site maintenance on an hourly or contract basis.

WordPress content is maintained through a browser-based interface. Additional users can be set up to allow multiple people to contribute to your site. If you choose to maintain your own content, we will train you and stand ready to answer questions as you go and correct any mistakes that may happen along the way!

All CMS systems must be very carefully administered to ensure that code updates are installed. Changes in the core code may require updates to templates and/or plugins to retain your site’s functionality. Regular backups of the database are essential! For these reasons, Web Designs of Houston very strongly recommends that clients with WordPress sites enter into an administrative maintenance contract even if they intend to maintain the content of the site themselves.
